How to Make Super Easy, Super Simple Way of Pan Fried Shumai (Siu Mai) Recipe

Shumai (烧卖; 燒賣, sīu-máai; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: sio-māi) is a type of traditional Chinese dumpling. In Cantonese cuisine, it is usually served as a dim sum snack. In addition to accompanying the Chinese diaspora, a variation of shaomai also appears in Japan (焼売, shūmai) and various southeast Asian countries.

In this recipe, you can make the fried shumai in an easy way using the pan. Wrapping of this shumai is so easy as well. You don’t need to be a shumai wrapping expert to make a delicious shumai at home! Give this recipe a try!

Ingredients

Serves 5 – 6 (12 pcs)

Steps

  1. In a bowl, add ground pork, soy sauce, sugar, sake, ginger, potato starch, and sesame oil 
  2. Mix well
  3. Once ground pork mixture is well mixed, add the onion
  4. Continue to mix
  5. Flatten the surface of the ground pork mixture
  6. Divide the ground pork mixture into 8 – 12
  7. Add oil on your hands
  8. Grab a portion of the ground pork mixture and shape it into a ball
  9. Place the wrapper on top of the ground pork mixture
  10. Twist the wrapper until the ground pork mixture is well wrapped
  11. Prepare a pan (do not turn on the heat yet), oil it and place the shumain
  12. Turn on the heat (mid), cook until the bottom turns brown
  13. Use paper towel to remove some excess oil
  14. Add some water, put the lid on and cook for 6 to 7 minutes (lower the heat)
  15. Remove the lid, turn of the heat
  16. Remove the Shumai from the pan
  17. Serve it!
