How to Make Homemade Tikoy (Chinese New Year Cake) Recipe

Tikoy, also known as nian gao, is a type of rice cake with significant cultural importance, especially during the Lunar New Year celebrations in many East Asian countries. The word “nian gao” sounds similar to the Chinese phrase meaning “year high” or “growing taller every year,” symbolizing the promise of growth, progress, and the coming of better times in the new year.

Tikoy plays a central role in Lunar New Year celebrations, and its consumption is deeply rooted in cultural traditions and symbolic meanings associated with the auspicious beginning of a new year.

Homemade Tikoy is very easy to make with only 3 ingredients (plus neutral oil) let’s celebrate the Lunar New Year along with the delicious homemade tikoy!

Ingredients

Serves 3 – 4


Steps

[brown sugar syrup]

  1. Combine the brown sugar and water in a pot
  2. Turn on the heat and mix them until the brown sugar is dissolved
  3. Bring it to a boil
  4. Once the brown sugar syrup has boiled, remove it from the heat and let it cool

[rice flour mixture]

  1. Mix the rice flour, and avocado oil with the brown sugar syrup
  2. Mix well until all the ingredients are well incorporated
  3. Prepare an 8in x 2in deep cake pan
  4. Apply oil to the cake pan
  5. Pour the rice flour mixture into the pan
  6. Tap a few times to remove the air
  7. Use a toothpick to pop the bubbles

[steam]

  1. Prepare a steamer with the boiling water
  2. Steam it for 50 minutes
  3. Cool it down and put it in the fridge overnight

[pan fry]

  1. Add eggs and sugar in a bowl
  2. Beat the eggs
  3. Cut the Tikoy into a rectangle shape
  4. And put in a bowl with beaten egg
  5. Coat the tikoy with the egg
  6. Heat the pan with oil
  7. Place the tikoy and cook until brown
  8. Flip it and cook also until brown
  9. Server it!
