Puto Bumbong is a Filipino purple rice cake. Traditionally, it is cooked in bamboo tubes and known as Chrismas season Filipino delicacy. In this recipe, I achieved the authentic taste and texture of Puto Bumbong using home steamer and you don’t need to have a bamboo steamer. My recipe is easy to follow so that you can enjoy this delicious Puto Bumbong at home! Happy holidays everyone!

Steps

  1. Soak the black rice and sweet rice for 2 days in the water
  2. Drain water and grind the rice until
  3. Transfer the ground rice to a bowl and combine it with glutinous rice flour until you achieve the clay-like texture. Adjust the consistency by adding glutinous rice flour if the mixture is too wet.
  4. Once the mixture is clay-like, grate it using a cheese grater
  5. Shape the grated mixture into a log shape
  6. Set up a steamer with boiling water
  7. Prepare a tray and line with foil
  8. Grease the foil with butter
  9. Place the Puto Bumbong mixture on top the lined foil and place it a steamer and cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until you reach the cooked sticky rice texture
  10. Top with brown sugar and freshly granted coconut
  11. Serve it!
